The recording of last month’s launch of the AEDRTC Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Researcher Self Check Tool is now available to watch. Held on Gadigal Country, the event brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, leaders, researchers, clinicians, and community members to celebrate a significant milestone in culturally safe eating disorder research.
The launch featured a Welcome to Country from Uncle Allen Madden and powerful reflections from First Nations speakers, including Leilani Darwin, Associate Professor Carmen Parter, Associate Professor Uncle Boe Rambaldini, and Professor Tom Calma AO. Speakers highlighted the importance of culturally grounded, community-led research and the role of non-Indigenous researchers in walking alongside First Nations communities.
The event also marked the Australian Government’s announcement of a $2.8 million investment in the first national research into eating disorders and disordered eating in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This First Nations–led project will work with communities across urban, regional, remote and very remote settings to build culturally safe definitions and frameworks to support care, policy and practice.
