Key Thinkers Forum: Eating Disorders, Wellbeing and a need for Research

This Forum discussed current and emerging food and eating disorder issues within community and the research and translation gaps and priorities that exist currently. It will help guide the development of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research & Translation Strategy as a key activity of the Australian Eating Disorder Research and Translation Centre.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Co-Production

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eating Disorders Co-Production will contribute Indigenous leadership and innovation to governance and all activities of the Centre and establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eating Disorder Research Strategy, in co-design with community.

We are charged with implementing The Australian Eating Disorders Research & Translation Strategy 2021-2031 which was developed over two years of consultation. It is our intention that the Strategy is a document that is used and is useful, that we respond to the gaps it identifies, bring to life the actions articulated through our consultations, and that it is a live document in so much as we use it as a springboard for the generation of new ideas, activities and strategic priorities as required.

The IgnitED Fund provided nine $25,000 grants to Australian residents with great ideas to work in a co-design process, bring their ideas to life, and build new relationships and research skills in eating disorders.

People with eating disorders come from diverse backgrounds & identities...so should our research teams and the research we conduct!

We're thrilled to be participating in Mardi Gras Fair Day 2023 in collaboration with colleagues from other national eating disorder organisations coming together for the first time under our campaign banner of 'everyBODY welcome'.

Holistic Understanding Study

By gathering lots of data about your unique experience with an eating disorder, we will deepen our understanding of these devastating illnesses.

What's Involved

This study is exploring what shapes eating disorders, things like your thoughts, biology, and life experiences, to help improve how they're understood and treated. Over the course of a year, you'll be asked to do a number of surveys, have a chat with a researcher, and possibly take part in things like brain scans or give samples like blood or stool. It's all about building a clearer picture of each person's experience so future care can be more tailored and effective.

Anyone 14 years or older with an eating disorder, or who thinks they may have an eating disorder, is invited to complete the consent form & survey above.

Anorexia Nervosa Treatment Trial

Free individualised treatment.

To be eligible, you must also enter the Holistic Understanding Study.

What's Involved

This study is testing a personalised care package for young people with early-stage anorexia nervosa. It includes therapy, nutrition support, and skills training tailored to each person’s needs, with input from their carers and clinicians. Participants will do assessments, attend regular sessions, and help researchers understand what works best for recovery.

People aged 14 to 25 years who have had anorexia nervosa for less than three years can express their interest through the Holistic Understanding Consent & Survey form above.

TailorED

Bulimia Nervosa / Binge Eating Disorder Treatment Trial

Free treatment that responds to you.

To be eligible, you must also enter the Holistic Understanding Study.

What's Involved

This study is looking at how to best support people with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder who don’t respond quickly to standard online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). After a few weeks of treatment, participants are matched to different care options, like extended therapy, personalised psychotherapy, or brain stimulation (TMS), based on how they’re doing. The aim is to find out which approach helps most and to make treatment more responsive to individual needs.

People under 65 years and who have bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder can express their interest through the Holistic Understanding Consent & Survey form above.

Lead Agency, InsideOut Institute for Eating Disorders, is a joint venture between the Sydney Local Health District and the University of Sydney
